Description

In this comprehensive course on substance use disorders, participants will learn DSM 5 criteria for diagnosing substance use disorders. Overviews on effects, risks, and typical methods of use will be provided for commonly misused substances. Participants will learn about screening and assessment tools that can be used to determine risk of use, level of care, withdrawal potential, and more. An overview of effective evidence-based practices for SUD will be explored. Participants will leave this training with a comprehensive resource guide for working with individuals with substance use disorders. 

Joan serves as a substance use prevention specialist at Easterseals MORC where she provides education and support for young people and their families. As part of the Community Team and the SUD Integrated Health Team, Joan also serves as a prevention resource for clinicians and is engaged in community outreach with schools, courts, and other youth-serving organizations. As a former substance use prevention coalition leader and public school educator for more than 25 years, Joan is passionate about helping kids, families, and communities to thrive by preventing addiction and harm through substance misuse.

Kelly Treharne is the Team Lead over the Integrated Health Pathway. She works with individuals and their families to support needs related to substance use, eating disorders, and medical concerns. Kelly is certified in Motivational Interviewing. She has worked with Easterseals MORC for 5 years as a case manager and clinician for outpatient family services. Kelly is a fully licensed clinician with an LPC, MA in Mental Health Counseling, and a BA is Psychology and Neuroscience.  

Dave is the care coordinator for the Integrated Health Pathway at Easterseals MORC, providing outreach to families by connecting them with Pathway services and screening each participant on a monthly basis to monitor their progress and inform their respective clinicians. He has been working with Easterseals MORC for over 1 year while training at Oakland University to receive his MA in clinical mental health counseling and work towards his LLPC. 

Objectives

  1. This training will provide participants with an overview of warning signs and risk factors of substance use. Education on commonly misused substances and DSM 5 criteria for diagnosing substance use disorders. 

  2. Comorbidity of substance use, and mental health diagnoses will be examined. Important points of considerations for clinicians to understand to provide harm reduction and avoiding stigmatized language. Further comorbidity between substance uses and medical considerations will be discussed. 

  3. Screening tools and assessments to provide best substance use related treatment recommendations will be covered. This presentation will also provide information on substance use related evidence-based practices for individual and group settings.
